The EzeScan Admin->Options form, Jobs tab includes an option called 'Generate Batch Identifiers and 2 sub options 'Prefix' and 'Incrementing Suffix'.

The batch 'Prefix' value is exposed via the <<BATCHPREFIX>> placeholder. The batch prefix is a string value (e.g. Batch_ )

The batch 'Incrementing Suffix' value is exposed via the <<BATCHSUFFIX>> placeholder. The batch suffix is a numeric value (e.g. 1 or 0000001).

The combination of the batch 'Prefix' and batch 'Incrementing Suffix' values is exposed via the <<BATCH>> placeholder. This is same value as using the <<BATCHPREFIX>><<BATCHSUFFIX>> placeholders.

The EzeScan Admin->Options form, Jobs tab includes an option called 'Generate Document Identifiers' and 1 sub option called Incrementing Value.

The document 'Incrementing Value' value is exposed via the <<UNIQUEDOCID>> placeholder. The value is a numeric value (e.g. 1 or 0000001).

Binarisation is the process of converting a colour or graysale image into a black and white image.

This functionality is exposed in several places in EzeScan as follows:

1. On the Job Admin form Image Enhancement tab, there is an 'Auto Binarise' option. When a job containing coloured pages is imported or scanned, each page is analysed to see whether it is a black and white image or a colour image. Images that contain only black and white are then converted from colour into black and white. Images that are colour will remain as colour.

2. On the Thumbnail Viewer Menu there is an 'Binarise (Auto Detection)' option. When a job containing coloured pages is dispayed in the viewer, each page is analysed to see whether it is a black and white image or a colour image. Images that contain only black and white are then converted from colour into black and white. Images that are colour will remain as colour.

3. On the Image Viewer Menu there is an 'Binarise (Auto Detection) option. When a job containing coloured pages is dispayed in the viewer, the current page is analysed to see whether it is a black and white image or a colour image. If the current page contains only black and white it is converted from colour into black and white. Pages that are colour will remain as colour.

4. On the Thumbnail Viewer Menu there is an 'Binarise (Force To BW)' option. When a job containing coloured pages is dispayed in the viewer, each colour page is converted from colour into black and white.

5. On the Image Viewer Menu there is an 'Binarise (Force To BW)' option. The current page is converted from colour into black and white.

6. On the Viewer Toolbar there is a "Binarise Current Page' icon. When pressed the current page is converted from colour into black and white.

Before zonal recognition EzeScan applies a default binarisation filter to the Colour zone to convert it to Black and White. In some cases this default filter may not adequately enhance lightly coloured text.

It is possible to override this default binarisation filter by using the KFI Field Properties form, Zone tab, Zone Enhancement frame, Convert Colours (R,G,B) Start/End/To options.

Before changing these options press the zone TEST button. Look at the zone image after enhancement and you'll see the characters are often light and poor quality,

Now try changing the Convert Colours (R,G,B) Start/End/To options to:

  R G B
START 1 1 1
END 240 240 240
TO 0 0 0

Then press the zone TEST button again. Now look at the zone image after enhancement and you'll see the characters are now darker, easier to read. The OCR ,ICR or BCR result should now be more accurate.

It is possible to just selectively enhance 1 colour (e.g. Red) and dropout the others by binarising only one of the RGB values like this:

  R G B
START 1 0 0
END 240 0 0
TO 0 0 0

In Windows Vista Microsoft changed slightly the way the common dialogs (File Open, Save, Print) are displayed to the user. This required a small modification in Ezescan 4.1 to make it compatable with these changes. This problem is resolved by applying Ezescan.exe Patch Update 4.1.38 or higher.

Direct link to FAQ

Please note: Applies to EzeScan 4.1 only.

a. Make sure you are installing EzeScan 4.1.38 or higher.

b. Login as Administrator before you install EzeScan. You might need to enable the Administrator account first in Control Panel-.Administrator Tools->Computer Management->Users.

c. Dwonload the Ezescan 4.1.X MSI installer from the website Downloads->Application Installers area (not the NON MSI Installer which is used for XP).

d. The MSI Installer will correctly install all of the EzeScan Program files and dlls. However If you used the NON MSI installer by mistake, then you may need to manually register the following dlls from a cmd shell.

cd \windows\system32
regsvr32 PegasusImaging.ActiveX.BarcodeXpress5.dll
regsvr32 PegasusImaging.ActiveX.SSXBC4.dll
regsvr32 PegasusImaging.ActiveX.ScanFix5.dll
regsvr32 PegasusImaging.ActiveX.OcrXpress1.dll
These dll's should all successfully register.

e. Download the latest EzeScan 4.1.Y Exe Update. Unzip the patch update file, and extract the EzeScan.exe and overwrite the existing file in c:\program files\outback imaging\ezescan directory.

f. Run ezescan and use the Admin->Licensing form to Import the supplied license file (it will have a .lic file extension).

g. Run EzeScan and make sure that any of your jobs that might use BCR, ICR, OCR work properly.

h. Logout as Administrator

i. Login as your operator login.

j. Run EzeScan and run any of your jobs that might use BCR, ICR, OCR to make sure they are still working properly.

You start EzeScan. setup a job that uses the Other Destination set to use the Hummingbird DM 4/5/6 integration. You successfully save 1 file into Hummingbird DM from Ezescan, but then it refuses to save any more. You discover that you have to manually kill off the dm.exe process to get it working again,

Try this to fix the problem:

Before you start EzeScan make sure that you have started and signed onto the Hummingbird DM extensions. If you do this first before you start Ezescan everything should work. Also make sure that you have EzeScan.exe 4.1.46 or higher.

To start the Hummingbird DM extensions use the Start->Programs->Hummingbird->DM Extensions->Windows Explorer DM extensions menu item.

You could create a batch file that starts the DM Extensions and then start Ezescan.

68. Why is the EzeScan WebDAV client for WebDAV, Sharepoint not working on Windows XP or Vista?

1. Please make sure that you are using a valid WebDAV Server Folder URL, and that you are using the correct user name and password to access that URL resource.

2. Try setting up a Windows Network Place that accesses the same URL. If this is setup properly then you should be able to copy files to/from the network folder using Windows Explorer.

3. Another likely cause is that the c:\program files\common files\system\ole db\msdaipp.dll file is either missing or the wrong version. We have found that the correct version is 11.0.5510.0 an its date Modified is Friday, 11 July 2003, 2:25:22 AM.

To resolve this issue please upgrade to version 4.2 Kofax VRS software.

EzeScan rquires a minimum of Kofax VRS 4.2 for the black seperator detection to work correctly.

If you have version 4.1 or below it is recommended to use barcode separator sheets or follow the instructions below to use our VRS seperator page.

  1. The file VRS_Separator.tif will reside in the \Program Files\Outback Imaging\EzeScan 4.2\Samples folder.
  2. Print this page out (double sided if you are scanning in duplex). If you print it on light yellow paper it will make it much easier to spot the separator pages, for removal from the batch of hardcopy documents after scanning has been completed.
  3. Assemble a batch of documents using the new separator pages.
  4. Using EzeScan Job Admin (F6), Profiling tab, adjust the ‘%White Fill’ for Separator Pages from 10% to 58%. (Please note that 58% white = 42% black. We have allowed a 4% tolerance so that the new separator pages should work reliably).
  5. Run the job and make sure your separator pages are detected and shown with a red border in the EzeScan Viewer.

Black & White images are usually much smaller than colour images.

For example if you scan an A4 page containing text (no graphics) in B&W at 200 DPI the resulting TIF Image would be around 30KB in size. That same page scanner in colour and saved as a TIG image with JPG compression would be around 330KB in size. That same page scanner in colour and saved as a TIG image with LZWcompression would be around 1000KB in size. That same page scanner in colour and saved as a TIG image with no compression would be around 11,000KB in size.

The following suggestions will help to speed up colour scanning.

a. Use the smallest scanning resolution wherever possible. Use 200 DPI instead of 300 DPI and your images will be approximately 1/2 the size. Smaller colour images are processed faster, and create smaller output files.

b. Untick 'Display Scanned Images For QA' on the F6 Job Admin form, Scanner tab. Displaying colour images during QA will slow the scanning process down.

c. If the documents are single sided, then turn off duplex scanning. No point is scanning both sides if you don't need to. Deleting blank pages takes longer when working with large colour images.

d. Use limited or no enhancement options on the F6 Job Admin form, Enhancement tab. When working with large colour images every enhancement step takes more time.

e. Use document scanning rather than batch scanning. Untick the 'Use Batch Profiling' option on the F6 Job Admin form. If you are just scaning single documents, there is no need to add the overhead of having Ezescan search for separator pages. This searching takes longer with colour images.
